New AKC Designation: The Snorkling Group

It's absolutely amazing; I wish you could see this!

We have a year old tri-colored collie named Douglas (a.k.a. Dougie). He's a real pleasant guy, and an exponent of what our Vet says are the only two emotions his own collies emit: happiness or fear. He shows his happiness when:

  1. there's people around
  2. we're eating and he's "eligible" to get a piece of this or that, or
  3. we go out in the yard to play
He's fearful when:

  • he's carried down to our basement (he's afraid of doorways)
  • he walks by and suddenly spots the sun tea jar that's a-brewing on a table
  • he's cautiously sniffing a big plastic ball that was recently purchased for him to play with out in the yard
After all, he never can tell when an errant doorway, a jar of tea or a plastic ball might try to invoke bodily harm on his person.

But, back to this "Snorkling" group that's gotta be created by the AKC. I was out on our deck this past weekend watching our pups (that's the aforementioned Dougie and our three Shelties-Lily, Lyric and Declan). After they had been running around for a little while, I decided to fill their "outdoor" water bowls so they could quench their thirsts.

Turning on the hose to fill the bowls is, of course, a supreme effort in and of itself...

Our pack never miises the opportunity to harass whomever has the unpleasant task of filling their water bowls. It seems to be a mandatory requirement that if you're a member of the "herding group," you're required to attack the hose when it's being used to fill water dishes. It's a cacaphony of sound with snaps, yelping, barking and absolute mayhem when the arduous task of water-bowl filling is attempted.

But, again I digress!

Bowls are filled, placed in the appropriate areas so that they pack can quench their thirst in peace. I sat back down to watch 'em as they drank. And, there's Dougie. Since he has the elongated snout of a collie (that I liken to that of a strange creature created in a Stephen King horror book), it takes a long time for him to lap up the water itself, let alone get it down his throat. When he's indoor, his efforts in this regard are best evidenced by the fact that he leaves puddles and long trails of water since when he finishes drinking he walks away from his bowl with water streaming out of his mouth. But outdoors, I got the opportunity to see that when he drinks, he actually submerges his nose into the bowl!

I guess this action helps him to get more water into his mouth as it then has less space to travel. But, what the heck!

AKC, are you listening?
