When I get home from my day job, I get changed into something more comfortable, grab a bite to eat and then take our pack of three Shelties and a tri-color Colie out to the yard to play. This itinerary is met with great expectations by the dogs, as it's a time to romp, jump and go crazy. This evening, however, was a little different...
You see, we had a slight plumbing problem in our house in that the drains were running slow in both the kitchen and bathroom sinks. This could mean only one thing...a scouring of our paint & sundry area in the basement in the hope that we still had a container of drain opener, or a trip to the local super home center (a.k.a. Home Depot). Unfortunately, the latter proved to be the road I had to travel.
So, after scarfing down some pasta that felt like lead in my stomach as my mind raced through the various problems a home owner could anticipate when drains are clogged (from a simple hair blockage to that dreaded call one must place to Roto Rooter and its contingent $$$), I hopped in our trusty ol' vehicle, raced to the Depot & grabbed not one but TWO separate containers of drain cleaners and flew back home. I was met by the expectant pack who were by now perplexed and confused as to why I didn't get with the program! But, I had some more serious issues on my mind as visions of home loans danced in my head. (Sorry, Santa; couldn't resist that silly play on words to one of your proprietary poems!)
The first exercise at pouring the drain un-clogger was unsuccessful and I felt that old sickening feeling a homeowner gets when a $10 project slowly morphs into a $50, $100, or $500 debacle. A second helping down the drains had me quite literally holding my breath as the chant of "Roto Rooter, Roto Rooter" was resonating in two-part harmony in my brain. I watched and waited for three, four, eight and then the full ten minutes...and then the water whooshed down the drain first in the kitchen and then the bathroom! We were rich with the savings we could now appreciate since the Roto Rooter man wasn't going to visit our home!
And so we did make it out the door to play, albeit about two hours later than normal. But, we all rejoiced in the fact that no stranger had to come into our den and upset the Shelties and Collie.
This is a picture of Lily, opne of our Shetland Sheepdogs, standing on the front porch of our den:
