Trenton Dog Show PDF Print E-mail
On Sunday, 5/7/06, we'll be off to the Trenton (NJ) Dog Show; here's a MAP showing where it'll be held. (Incidentally, my bride's informed me that InfoDog has a pretty comprehensive database of upcoming dog shows; check it out.)

This particular event is classified as one of the biggest (if not the biggest) dog shows on the East Coast (if not in the whole  country)...

Crazy Sheltie Antics PDF Print E-mail
Not sure if you're familiar with the crazy quirks Shelties are known to have, but they can sure drive you crazy!

For one reason or another, a normal activity you might perform is processed in the brain of a Shetland Sheepdog as an opportunity to start barking, spinning rapidly in circles and all in all creating a veritable cacaphony of sounds that makes one desire to close all the windows in the house so that the neighbors don't start complaining!

Here are merely a few of the weird behaviors our three Shelties (Lily, Lyric and Declan) have been known to show during the course of a day...

Douggie Loves Dollies! PDF Print E-mail
Our one-year old tri-colored Collie, Douglas, loves toys. Specifically, he loves stuffed dolls like this one we purchase for him. This particular one squeaks when squeezed in two separate areas...he loves it! He'll walk around the house with his doll du jour in his mouth, gumming it, playing with it, just having a great old time with his plaything.

His real pleasure, however, is when he can rummage at leisure through the wooden box where we store balls, stuffed dolls, chewies, etc. for our three Shelties...

Doggie Dentition Day PDF Print E-mail
It was Tuesday, 5/2/06 and Declan, our alpha Sheltie (from whence he earned the nickname The Little King), was scheduled that day to have his teeth cleaned at our Vet's office.

My bride makes a concerted attempt to brush the teeth of all FOUR of our dogs. But Declan always is the most difficult, most irrascible of all of, constantly jerking his head away, growling and altogether making the expeience most unpleasant for all involved. Although at one time this included trying to take out his frustrations on the other dogs by attacking them, my bride very quickly learned to separate the pack. We're adherents to that old tenet "divide and conquer."

And so, Declan's aversion to teeth cleaning earned him the distinction of taking a ride to the beloved Vet's office to have his teeth cleaned. Read on...

Herding Dog Scared By Sheep! PDF Print E-mail
NJ: May 2, 2006: A tri-colored Collie was severely frightened this afternoon after coming face to face with a mother sheep at a local farm.

The owners of the dog, proponents of dogs in the herding group for quite a few years, were taken aback and visibly shakened by the apparent abject fear elicited by their dog. One of the owners was heard to utter "It was a terrible display of ineptitude" as they led their dog in disgrace back to their van.

Douggie Birthday PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 4/22/06 was our tri-collie's birthday; he just turned one year old.

Nicknamed "the goofball" after the crazy antics he's been known to show, Douglas (a.k.a. "Douggie") has proven to be a much-loved member of our pack. He's assimilated himself well into the mix with our other three dogs, all Shelties.

But notice that we mentioned he's assimilated himself well; the other dogs sometimes beg to differ with that statement...

Dog Personalities PDF Print E-mail
Our next tome will be on the personalities of our three Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) and Collie. Here's a brief outline of what we'll be discussing:
  1. Lyric - (1st in picture) 7+ years old Sheltie. Bossy, serious, alpha wanna-be, distinguished, former show dog. Given to us by our breeder, she previously lived in a house with many other Shelties. Extremely pack smart & can handle herself.
  2. Lily - (2nd in picture) 4 years old Sheltie, a.k.a. "Hammerhead." Shy, cute, loveable, couldn't care less for strangers (defined as anyone invading her space who is not a member of her family). Extremely agile.
  3. Declan - (3rd in picture) 3 years old Sheltie. the Little King. True alpha, rules the pack. A pocket rocket.
  4. Douglas - almost 1 year old Collie. Alias "The Goofball." Happy-go-lucky, doesn't have a care in the world. Only emotions he exhibits are happiness or fear. Fast as a racehorse. Most serious flaw is that his elongated snout causes water he attempts to drink to cascade out of his mouth, causing constant flooding fears in our home.
(BTW, please note nicknames assigned to dogs are from the author and are sometimes frowned upon by the real alpha in our family, a.k.a. my bride.)

Following are some other traits, nuances and peculiarities of our pack...

Canine Breakfast Madness PDF Print E-mail
It's as if all hell has broken lose at our house in the morning. Sure, they haven't eaten since the day before, but what's the reason for our dogs to go absolutely insane while their breakfast is being made in the morning?

The Sheltie and The Stranger PDF Print E-mail
One of our Shelties, Lily (a.k.a. Sunebank Summer Piccalily. affectionately nicknamed Hammerhead by yours truly) loves to romp and play in our yard on the agility equipment we've assembled. With the help of my infinitely patient bride, Lily was taught how to navigating through weave poles, sail over jumps, run through tunnels, walk the dog walk and  hop onto a pause table. After proving her proficiency on these items, we decided to enroll our dog in a class so she could learn more about the sport itself as well as gain confidence in herself.

Things were progressing along very nicely in her class until her trainer did the unspeakable...she touched Lily! Here are the sordid details of the absolutely horrible ordeal (!) she was exposed to...

Herding Dog Weirdness PDF Print E-mail
If you've come to this web site before, you've probably read that the newest member of our pack is a tri-colored Collie whom we named Douglas. His breed's a member of the "herding" group, as are the three Shetland Sheepdogs that also gnaw an occassional chewy or two in our house. The herding group is sometimes charaterized as loyal, intelligent and athletic, all traits to which we can attest.

So, I guess you could say we lean toward that particular group for our choice in canine companions. What we've also come to learn is that they can be strange creatures at times...

A New Den? PDF Print E-mail
Our family (including dogs, of course) has lived in a certain house in a certain state for a few years. As a matter of fact, our furry friends have only known residence in the state we're presently living in. The pack has certainly acclimatized itself to our immediate environs.

So, what can they expect if/when we relocate to a new state, an area with new smells, a new den, and perhaps even new food?

Vacation Time PDF Print E-mail
Well, it's a bit of a vacation for me. I'm scheduled to re-paint our picket fence that's beginning to show some wear. The picture highlighted in the prior sentence isn't our fence, but as it seemingly fades off into the distance, too far for the human eye to see its end, it reminded me of the job I had at hand when I played Michelangelo outdoors.

Oddly enough, at least part of said wear & tear is actually attributable to the four members of the herding group that share our living quarters (a.k.a., den) with us. I'll share details with all in a few days after I manage to clean these damn gobs of paint off my fingers and hands...
