A Herding Group Christmas Message |
We're the three Shelties and tri-color Collie who reside at Presto Dog world headquarters. We just want to take a minute of your busy time to wish everyone a happy, holy Christmas season. If your persuasion is not of the Christian variety, we wish you a holy season and new year just the same. Here's a couple of pictures of us:

Notice how we're all dressed up in our Christmas finery? For those of you who don't know, the Shelties pictured in order are Lily, Lyric and Declan, and the big Collie is Dougie. Wondering why we're not all in the same picture together? It's 'cause Dougie can't stay still and in one position for more than 12 seconds!Anyway, we can't wait for Santa! Hope he brings us lots of toys, chewies and hamburgers! |

A Collie's Christmas List: Part I |
Well, it's finally my turn to post my Christmas list here at Presto Dog! Hello, my name is Douglas, a.k.a. "Dougie." I'm a year & a half old tri-color Collie residing in the Presto Dog den with my three other litter mates: Lyric, Lily & Declan. They're all Shelties so I guess when we're hangin' out together I sorta stick out like the proverbial sore thumb.
Since this is Christmas time I'll be nice but gotta mention that Declan, the alpha dog in our pack, can be a bit overbearing at times. He's always trying to chase me, boss me around or show his dominance over me in some way or another. I guess if we were living out in the wild that would be a good thing, always watching out for the welfare of his family. But why does he always seem to find me to pick on?
Anyway, although I'm a lot taller and therefore heavier than my smaller pack members, we're actually related in the canine world-both the Collie and the Shetland Sheepdog are member of the Herding group. And that's just what we do-herd things. On the list for these activities include sheep, cattle, other dogs, kids and regular people like you. You name it and we find a reason to try to keep it all together in one neat, contained group. This can, of course, get to be annoying at times, especialy when we're "doing our thing" and that consists of keeping our human house members in a group. This could mean making sure they don't get up and try to leave the room, attempt to put on a jacket or do anything else we feel is not proper herding group etiquette. However, it's O.K. to get up and leave the room to get us chewies, cookies or other treats. Just let us know and we'll let you pass without problem.
So, my Christmas list. I like those great big chewies-you know, the ones that look like the NY Times rolled up. Remember, I'm a large dog so I like, well, large things. Balls I can squoosh in my mouth as I run around our yard are also wonderful toys. I have a coulpe of giant balls, the ones that are as big as beach balls, that we keep our in the yard. The Shelties are realy too small to play with those. I hope Santa doesn't bring me one of those 'cause when I run after them full speed I sometimes land on top of them and have been known to land on top of them. I guess it's sorta funny 'cuase my human freinds get such a kick out of my antics.
I suppose my list wouldn't be complete unless I mentioned chewies or cookies. I like just about anything. And, let me say the Shelties seem to like whatever I do 'cause if I'm not around they sem to steal my stuff and use it for themselves. This is sorta funny too 'cause my stuff is so large and they have a hard time dragging it off to a corner where they can nibble or chew on it. But, we're all one big, happy family so what they do really doesn't bother me at al. I'll let you in on a little secret...sometimes when they're not around I try to steal their things, too! Their stuff is small but I enjoy playing with all their dolls, balls and other goodies anyway.Oh! After reading the posts by the Sheltoes down below as to what they want for Christmas, a hamburger or hot dog or two would be a great idea for me, too! I love being a carnivore! So, the question is-will Santa be good to us? I know at least that I've been a real good dog this year and sincerely hope Santa recognizes that fact. And I'll always share my stuff with my litter mates because I'm an even-tempered kind of guy and just want to be friends with everyone.
Are you listening, Santa? Right below is a picture of me so you don't confuse me with any other dog: Happy Dougie |

Whether you're a first time visitor or an ol' friend who decides to come back and visit with Presto Dog from time to time, you probably realize, after lookin' around, that we love Shelties. Actually, if you look closely enough, you'll also see pictures here 'n there of Douglas, a Collie. So, our love for genus canine is really for the herding group in general. This particular breed is loving, devoted and fun to be around. They're playful and energetic, sometimes much too much so, to our dismay. Take for instance last weekend, when we were painting room after room after room in our house. The dogs wanted to do nothing but go outside and play, which is what we generally do on weekends. But the needs for the house overtook those of the dogs. We felt like we'd done the Sistene Chapel with paint brushes by the time Sunday evening rolled around! The dogs did NOT like our antics one bit. Declan, our alpha boy, was particulary upset with our pre-occupation with various pigment choices. He performed his infamous "dive bomb" runs on poor Douglas several times. This is when he makes a bee-line for Dougie; if the latter doesn't clear the area, the former smacks into him and usually walks away with tufts of Dougie's hair streaming from his mouth. Of course we don't allow such antics; I merely state them to show that our pack was out of sorts due to other obligations previously mentioned.Anyway, the semi-world famous Presto Dog photographer contacted me this morning and sent the following two pictures he took over the weekend to me via e-mail. They're of Lily, our sweetest Sheltie. Please take a gander:
We love our Pack!Want to see your dog's picture here? Contact Presto Dog by clicking here or by clicking on the Contact Presto Dog link on the menu to the left and we'll send you details on how to post you dog's picture for alll the world to see...for free!Sweet! |

Whenever we got out-to the store shopplng, visiting, or whatever-we crate our dogs. Now, I'm certain that statement evokes two opinions from readers...one thinking it's not nice to crate dogs and the in its antithesis, meaning it's O.K. to crate 'em. Initially, I adhered to the former belief-that is was cruel to confine animals. However, after living with our pack members for over 12 years (some no longer with us), I now believe that they love their crates. It gives 'em a sense of security and makes 'em feel content. Just so everyone feels at home there's a separate crate for each of the dogs: one for Lyric, one for Lily, one for Declan and one for Douglas. So, the other evening when the bride and I were going out, I called the pack to get into their respective crates. This is a happy occasion because it means they're gonna get cookies! No sooner had I called to the dogs than a mighty trampling sound was heard, increasing in its intesity until the pack rounded the corner and quite literally flew into their respective "houses." Declan's crate is stacked on top of Lily's so there are times when I need to give our little alpha Sheltie a boost to make it up to the second floor. After doing this, I put the cookies for each of 'em into the crates and left the room, not goving my actions a second thought.
Imagine my surprise when, returning from our evening out of a couple of hours I opened Lily's crate and out both she AND Lyric came, flying out the door into the other room. Somehow, two dogs had occupied the same crate for the past few hours!
Here's a crate similar to the one our two Shelties were in the other evening. Although the two girls were O.K. after their "ordeal," from now on, I'm gonna be sure the crates are occupied one to a customer! |
