Our Watering Hole
Dogs will adapt to their environment. By this I mean they instinctively make whatever changes are necessary without batting an eye to secure food, lodging, etc. to keep themselves healthy. Granted, the Presto Dog pack are all domesticated animals as I'm sure your pets are too, but I see vestiges of their ability to survive as we go from day to day.

For instance, a simple trip outdoors and its subsequent play time recently revealed the adaptability aforementioned. Notice the picture below:

Doug the Adaptable

It shows Dougie, our tri-color Collie, trotting around our yard. As you're looking at him, over his left shoulder you may be able to make out a green watering can. A minute before this picture was taken, Dougie had gone over to the watering can, inserted his extra-long tongue into it and took a satifying drink.

Now, it's not that we're cheap with the water or anything like that; it's just that when Dougie wants is water, it better be around!

He's a tribute to Charles Darwin who noted that the strongest species is the one that survivest.

Dog Feet
Because it's been unseasonably warm on the East coast of the USA this year, the ground has never frozen. This means that any rain creates a muddy situation because we've lost some grass in the yard in different places.

In addition, our little alpha dog, Declan, takes some strange pleasure in chasing our tri-color Collie, Dougie, all around the place. I call it "training," but I think it's really a herding instinct that's being fostered by their behaviors.

When the "training" is done, it's time to go back into our house.den. And, that's the time for feeot cleaning. This involves, of course, cleaning the dogs' feet so that all the mud & dirt they managed to collect doesn't become part of our decor.

Here's a shot of two of our Shetland Sheepdogs, Declan & Lily, immediately prior to having their feet cleaned:

You can see the old towels we saved for this purpose over Declan's head in the background. And, that's a piece of Dougie on the right-hand side of the picture. _________________________________________________________________________

Shelties Lookin' for Trouble
To provide a safe and happy environment for our canine companions, we fenced in our yard a few years ago. It keeps the pack in, kids out and provides us with peace of mind 'cause we can literally open the door and let the dogs out.

However, we temper the freedom we can offer our dogs with reality in that we're always out with them to make sure the gates weren't inadvertently left open or that a creature of some kind (squirrel, cat, etc.) isn't in the area, which would drive the pack crazy.

The other morning, I was out with the pack and happened to see that Lily & Declan were deeply engrossed in something that was occurring outside the fence that keeps 'em in our yard. I pointed this out to the semi-world famous Presto Dog photographer who was with us and he captured the scene in the picture immediately below:

I'm certain our friends were looking for trouble but their efforts were tempered by our fence. I just know whatever they were tryin' to get into would require a clean up or intervention on our part of some capacity!

Dougie Runs
Dougie, our tri-color Collie, is three time bigger than our Shelties, Lyric Lily and Declan. Since he's a young guy (about 1.75 years old), he's always running around the yard acting like, well, a puppy.

Now there's nothing wrong with that. It's just that when it's muddy outside, it takes an inordinately long time to wipe his huge mop feet free of the dirt, mud, twigs and tree parts he manages to accumulate on his person during his frequent jaunts.

Here's a shot of Dougie running toward the semi-world famous Presto Dog photographer:

Dougie did manange to stop before crashing into our worthy photographer. Luckily for the latter, I'll say. BTW, that's Lyric in the background. You'll also see a pink ball over her head & to the left; Dougie punctured that with his huge incisors. And right in Dougie's path is a plastic beach ball that Declan deflated with his teeth. _________________________________________________________________________
